The Urban Design Lab (UDL) engages a range of applied projects. A particular emphasis is given to green and sustainable infrastructure, food and the urban environment, and climate change and adaptation, including coastal resiliency. The focus is on critical considerations for next generation global urbanism, and UDL resources draw on the broad range of expertise in the natural and social sciences within the Earth Institute at Columbia University, as well as academic schools and related programs within the university generally, and other national and international universities that are also frequent collaborators. Applied projects often include a teaching component in the form of research seminars and design studio coursework.
