New Designs for the Future City

HSSP_headpage

Matching extensive research unit participation requests with young people interested in sustainability issues and charting a path in urban studies, the Urban Design Lab at Columbia University’s Earth Institute has developed an intensive and productive summer course intended to expose students to emerging trends in urban sustainability and help them explore new solutions for sustainable cities in the context of a real world project. The course focuses on an urbanization challenge for an actual client and asks teams of students to work collaboratively and think creatively, generating new ideas and approaches and exploring non-traditional methods in proposing solutions. Project work is guided by researchers from the Urban Design Lab and teaching assistants from the Sustainable Engineering Graduate Scholars Program (SEGUE) at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).
